The First Annual Allyance Masquerade Ball will be held at Boulevard 3, it will be a splendid affair with a strict black tie dress code. This event is by invitation only.

Gen Art is proud to be able to provide Gen Art Associate Producer & Higher Level Members 2 complimentary tickets to a Masquerade Ball to raise money and awareness for all Leukemia sufferers. Queen Josephine Aban Guillen: Bani, Pangasinan California Association Coronation

Los Angeles: Her Majesty Queen Josephine Calizar Aban Guillen was recently crowned at a formal Coronation Night at the prestigious Marriott Hotel in Torrance last September 1, 2007. In 1991 after series of accounting jobs in Makati, she decided to go to the US to try her luck. Decided and loyal as she is, she was employed by Washington Mutual Bank for 15 years until the corporate office decided to transfer the operations in San Antonio Texas this 2007. She has now joined City National Bank as a Call Center specialist.

Josie has found her true love in the person of Magno Guillen, a loveable, funny and unassuming Peruvian she met in 1995. They were both smitten with each other and got married in 1996. This year will mark their 11 years of wedded bliss. Coming from two different cultures, I could not help but ask about the secret of their relationship. “It’s all about give and take. He gives, and I take everything!” Josie laughed with all abandon. “But seriously, one just needs to listen when the other on talks. We give each other the chance to vent without contradicting, for as long as it takes. Afterwards, the storm passes, and we’re smiling and holding hands again. It is also important to have common interests.” When time permits, both enjoy dining out and attending parties. Put the Salsa, Swing, Cha-cha and Cumbia music on and they would surely dance the night away.

The Bani Association has been instrumental to Josie’s being active in the past years. She has served as Business Manager since 2005 and the wind behind many successful fund raising campaigns. Her tireless efforts directly benefited our hometown via projects funded by the Bani Association.


When asked what she intends to accomplish with her reign as the “Queen”, Josie looks back with fond memories of her humble beginnings in Bani. She remembers the simple life back then without the modern conveniences and distractions. “No. TV, no computers, cell phones, and no IPODS. I had to go to the library to do research while the reference books are outdated, about 10-20 years old already. I’d like to focus on education and lead the youth. I would also like to see Bani catch up with the 21st century”.

With a strong determination coupled with hard work, she has achieved her dreams, if
not the American Dream. This time, she wants to give back to the community and the people of Bani her God give talents and resources. “God has been good to me and Magno all these years and could not ask for anything more.” With her infectious laughter and constant smile, one becomes easily at ease with her. Her genuine concern about the younger generation seals her vision for a better Bani. “The youth must maintain the balance between keeping our values and tradition and being open to new technology to move forward.” Her renewed happiness goes beyond self and has crossed borders and boundaries for a better Bani. Josie is truly a Queen with a pure heart.

GMA Pinoy TV, the home of ‘telefantasyas’ will break boundaries once again as it brings viewers to a galactic outer space adventure, when it premieres ZAIDO, Pulis Pangkalawakan. GMA PINOY TV proudly presents the first-ever Pinoy-made Metal Hero Series beginning October 10.

Dennis Trillo plays Gallian, the first to become a Zaido, the highest rank of ‘Pulis Pangkalawakan. He lost his parents because of Le-ar’s evil conquests and was then adopted by the Galactic Force. Because he has the blood of a hero, he has extraordinary skills in combat. Gallian is the Blue Zaido, head of the Zaido, who was tasked to look for other Zaido all over the world to help him fight for the safety of the universe.

Gallian meets Alexis (Marky Cielo), who witnessed the tragic death of his father thus vowed to help destroy evil. Alexis shall become the Green Zaido. Gallian also comes upon Cervano (Aljur Abrenica). Although Cervano grew up surrounded by wealth, an incident will occur that would test what he is made of. Cervano will become the Red Zaido. Together, Gallian, Alexis, and Cervano shall form the Zaido, Pulis Pangkalawakan.


The three Zaido will engage in intensive training under the leadership of Commander Zion (Ian de Leon), head of the Galactic Force. Also joining them in the Galactic Force Academy are Lyka (Karel Marquez), Commander Zion’s daughter and a teacher at the academy; and Amy (Kris Bernal), a Galactic Force Academy student whom Alexis and Cervano will fight over for her affection. Will these brave warriors be able to save not just their loved ones but the whole world from the powerful evil that threatens them?

The cast of Zaido features a powerhouse ensemble of the best and most respected names in television, led by Raymart Santiago, Tirso Cruz III, Diana Zubiri, Dion Ignacio, Lovi Poe, Robert Villar and Ms. Lorna Tolentino as Helen, the loving mother of Alexis, Alvaro, and Oggy. The Party

This was Sunday 9/23/07 and the party was scheduled to start around 5:oopm. The address was located in the highlands area north of Los Angeles and really hard to find. However, thru sheer determination and a phone call to my friend Vics Magsaysay who gave me directions, I got to the party ala Filipino time.

Approaching that front door was intimidating for me since I didn’t know too many individuals inside. It was pleasing to see homeowner and host Ed Rame greet me at the door with that warm smile reflective of Filipino hospitality. His home sits atop the hill in a cul-de-sac with a million dollar view of the sprawling Los Angeles skyline. It must be nice to have a home like that.

The get together was in celebration of the September birthdays for Susan Rosal, Manny Ortega, and Janelle So. This actually was a party attended by the management and staff of Taliba News Publications. It was pleasant talking to owner/publisher Manny Patolot. He is a very unassuming person who genuinely enjoys being with his crew. As the Taliba patriarch, he conveys a relaxed operating mode enabling his people to utilize their creative actions in a non-stressful environment. This organization reminds me of a mom and pop store on its way up.

It was a small party. There were about 20 people in attendance. But it was a big party in the sense that everyone had fun. The food was great and a person could feel the camaraderie in the air. Teasing and jokes at the other person’s expense was prevalent followed by laughter and an occasional slap on the shoulder. I could sense the closeness and affection everyone had for each other.


The celebrants had a chance to blow the candles from not one but two cakes and show their singing skills via Karaoke. Never for one moment did I feel like a stranger in their environment.

I can only say that if all Filipino-American organizations had the Taliba spirit, then our community would be a lot better off. Artists need each other to flourish. They feed off of each other’s creative ideas, which then lays the foundation for success. The caring is what matters.

Again, Happy Birthday Suzan, Janelle, and Manny! You embody the positive traits of our beautiful race. Party on!

Spin Gallery Presents: "Knee Deep and Blowing"

Spin, home of museum-quality rare and classic cars, will be opening their Venice gallery space to the paintings of Carlos Vera. On Sunday, September 30th, Spin will be open during the Abbot Kinney Street Festival presenting “Knee Deep and Still Blowing,” featuring the paintings of L.A.-based Carlos Vera.

Inspired by the resiliant spirit of the musicians of New Orleans, this show features eight large-format oil on canvas paintings. Five of the works will be displayed in finished form, while Carlos will be live-painting the remaining three in the Spin Gallery during the day on Sunday. Between the hours of Noon and 6 p.m. people are invited to wander in and out of the Gallery and enjoy the soulful beats of DJ Braden as they see the artist at work. The paintings will be sold via silent auction during the day, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Voice of the Wetlands, a non-profit organization benefitting Louisiana’s wetlands, wildlife and it’s people..

Tierro, Arcilla complete RP sweep of Davis Cup Tennis Finals

KUWAIT CITY: Patrick John Tierro and Johnny Arcilla routed separate rivals Sunday to complete a Filipino sweep of Kuwait in the Asia-Oceania Zone Group II Davis Cup Tennis finals here.

Tierro thumped Ali Ghareeb, 6-3, 6-1, while Arcilla came back from a 1-4 deficit in the second set to beat Ahmad Rabeea Muhammad, 6-1, 7-5, in the reverse singles of the best-of-five matches tie to formalize the Philippines’ entry into the elite Group I of the zone next year.

The Philippines had clinched the tie on Saturday when an ailing Cecil Mamiit and Eric Taino bested Muhammad Al-Ghareeb and Muhammad Siddiq, 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, in the pivotal doubles match.

Mamiit, who was rushed to a hospital Friday evening after contracting an allergy (not food poisoning as earlier reported), started the Philippine juggernaut with a 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 rout of Rabeea in Friday’s opening singles after which Taino made it 2-0 for the Philippines by humbling Kuwaiti No. 1 Al-Ghareeb, 6-2, 5-3, 7-5.

The win sent the Philippines back to Group I where it played last in 1997 and will wade into the 2008 competitions in the company of Australia, Japan, Thailand, Uzbekistan, India, Kazakhstan and Taiwan.

“We must get ready for Group I early. This will be the real competition,” the 31-year-old Mamiit said.

Mamiit also assured everyone that his allergy has “gone away” and was sure it was not caused by the tinolang manok provided for the team, upon Mamiit’s request, by the members of the Filipino Tennis Association in Kuwait (FTAK) and cooked by Cristy Miguel from Pangasinan.

“The whole team was eating tinola for the past week and I was the only one hit by allergy. I hope that in our future campaigns in other countries, the Filipinos there will give the same support the Filipinos here gave us. And in behalf of the team, we’d like to thank them for this,” Mamiit said

“Phase three of our program is now complete but this will not be the end,” nonplaying captain Martin Misa said, adding that the team will now turn its full attention to the country’s campaign in the coming Southeast Asian Games where the Nationals will defend their men’s team title and Mamiit his singles and doubles crowns with Taino.

Mamiit and Taino left Sunday night to catch a tournament in Los Angeles while Tierro, Arcilla, Misa and coach Chris Cuarto will be back in Manila Tuesday evening.

Remastered in a two-disc edition, the package includes a “never-before-released” extended film version of the groundbreaking film plus new interviews with Jennifer Lopez, and Selena’s family, deleted scenes and a brand new “making of ‘Selena’ features” among bonus extras.

BISHOP SOLIS TO CELEBRATE MASS AT
RGJM’S 24TH ANNUAL ROSARY CRUSADE

Bishop Oscar A. Solis, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, will be the principal celebrant of the holy mass at the 24th Annual Rosary Crusade sponsored by the Rosary Groups for Jesus and Mary of San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley that will be held on October 7, 2007, at St. Catherine of Siena Church located at 18115 Sherman Way, Reseda, California. The theme of the Rosary Crusade is: Mary, Model of Faith and Hope.

The celebration will start at 3:00 p.m. with the staging of the Living Rosary. The “living rosary” is one of the focal points of the yearly celebration since October 1, 1995, when the 185-foot long rosary was donated to RGJM by a Panorama City rosary group member. It is called “living rosary” because each bead of the rosary is held by RGJM members who participate in praying the rosary.

According to RGJM’s President, Aurora La Madrid, the holy mass will follow immediately, during which time, the incoming officers and directors of RGJM for the next two years, would be inducted into office by Rev. Fr. Albert H. Avenido, RGJM Spiritual Director.

A procession inside the church premises will follow and a reception and fellowship will be held at the auditorium. . This year’s celebration is hosted by the Mother of Divine Grace Rosary Group and the Our Lady of All Nations Rosary Group, both from Reseda, and coordinated by Terry Mate and Winnie Lagman, respectively.

Ken Burns Take on "The War."

Ken Burns is the preeminent historical documentarian of our time. He has revolutionized the way we tell stories about our past and the way we view photographs. His technique of panning and slowly zooming into photogaphs is one of the most effective techniques to create drama. Whether he is talking about jazz, baseball, or the Civil War, Burns can turn any historical event into an entertaining and educational documentary.

On Sunday, September 23rd, Ken Burn will debut his latest historical documentary, “The War”. “The War” is a 14-hour, seven-part series on PBS, which explores personal accounts of one of the most gruesome wars in mankind’s history. Burns has spent the past seven years chasing down the last remaining survivors of World War II, to document their tales. Stories from Omaha Beach to Guadalcanal, from the Ardennes to the Phillippine Sea will be told through historical footage and photographs that is meant to be detailed and comprehensive.

“The War” also faces some controversy. Burns has been targeted by Latino-Americans for not including any Latino stories into his documentary. One of the more fascinating stories of World War II was the deportation of Latinos to Mexico in the 1930s despite having American Citizenship. When World War II began, the deported Latinos then where drafted back into the American military, and fought in the war. This part of the war has rarely been documented in historical texts. Although the final version of the film has not been released, it is expected that the Filipino experience will be one of the highlights of this multi-faceted documentary.

A writer’s story, Jlo’s performance, and a CIA-assassin on the run

Three films I’ve seen during its media screening and still currently in release are – “Becoming Jane” from Miramax Films, Universal Pictures’ “The Bourne Ultimatum,” and the dramatic film “El Cantante” from Picturehous. Common in three films are solid performances from main lead actors, its well-scripted screenplay, and best soundtracks.

Becoming Jane, directed by Julian Jarrold, is based on the early life of famous author Jane Austen (Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice), played by Anne Hathaway (Devil Wears Prada, The Princess Diary) and her flirtatious affair with Thomas Langlois Lefroy, played by BAFTA-nominated Scottish actor james McAvoy. The movie, which is inspired by real events chronicled in the book with the same title (written by Jon Spence), is peppered with elegant costumes designed by Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh and original soundtrack composed by Adrian Johnston.

El Cantante which had its Los Angeles Premeire at the Directors Guild of America saw real-life couple Jennifer Lopez (who also served as an executive producer for the film) and husband Marc Anthony at the red carpet with guests Ana Ortiz, Zoe Saldana, Eva Longoria, Maria Conchita Alonso, Leonor Rivera, Lupe Ontiveros, and many others. At the Tip Sheet given to the media, David and Victoria Beckham, Tom Cruise, Jada and Will Smith were expected to attend but provided a “no-show.” Co-writer and director Leon Ichaso and co-star Manny Perez also attended. The film is the dramatic-biography based on the life story of Puerto Rican salsa pioneer singer Hector Lavoe (exceptionally played by Marc Anthony) and his passionate relationship with Puchi (in a bold and surprising performance by Jennifer Lopez). The film follows his skyrocket to the international fame, his unable to escape the allure of drugs, his attempted suicide, and the his untimely death from AIDS.

“The Bourne Ultimatum,” the third and purportedly final installment of the Jason Bourne identity saga is a pounding, pulsating-thriller that provides almost constant adrenaline rush for two hours. Matt Damon returns as the former C.I.A. officer in search of his own identity. Bourne dodges new, superior assassins as he searches for his unknown past while a government agent tries to track him down. Director Paul Greengrass (United 93, Blood Sunday) is back in the director chair. The film also stars Julia Stiles, Joan Allen, Edgar Ramirez, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Albert Finney, among others.

The film is an adaptation of Lualhati Bautista's prize-winning novel, Dekada '70 which chronicles a middle-class Filipino family who, over the space of a decade, become aware of the political policies that have ultimately led to repression and a state of martial law.

Remembering Martial Law

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law on September 21, 1972 by former President Marcos. Except for the elderly ones, only a few remember it when then Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile, now a Senator, was "ambushed" supposedly by the New People's Army and so, to "stop the Communist takeover", Marcos declared Martial Law.

Congress was abolished. After Martial Law, it seems it has not improved from the Congress of pre-Martial Law that made Marcos decide to abolish it. You only have to read his book on the declaration of Martial Law, entitled, "Today's Revolution: Democracy."

He called it a revolution from the center. And he acted as though the three branches of government were in his hands. Senators, Congressmen, and many other officials including the Courts were intimidated by him. Effectivity of some laws was suspended.

Newspapers, radio, and television stations critical of Marcos were closed, affecting journalists, and media people. They were placed in the stockade.

Glendale Kiwanis "Walk the Talk" 5k Walk

This Saturday, the 22nd of September 2007, teachers, parents and children will join Fil-Am Kiwanians in the local community in a 5k Walk to create awareness of and literally begin changing the health habits of our children to improve their overall quality of life. The 5k walk, dubbed as Wellness Walk 4 Education, will convene at 7:30 am in the Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) parking lot located at 223 N. Jackson Street, Glendale, Ca 91206.

The Wellness Walk 4 Education is part of the club’s comprehensive health program which will culminate in next year’s Wellness Expo that will be inclusive of health workshops and will bring together health and fitness vendors who represent a myriad of services and products from dentists to health supplements and exercise equipment. “The idea is to recognize that the health concerns of our youth is not separate from or outside of our lives but rather is a lifestyle matter. Children do not create their own habits but rather they are taught. So the whole family has to transform their eating habits and their exercise habits if we’re to correct the harm that is occurring,” states Marlene Cagatao, sponsorship chair.

In light of this, Fil-Am Kiwanis of Glendale felt that the Wellness Walk 4 Education needed to incorporate the many aspects that make up good health. They realized that families and educational institutions cannot provide adequate solutions to the problem. So they have formed strategic alliances with community based organizations such as GUSD, YMCA, and FABAG (Filipino American Business Association of Glendale), as well as corporate partners such as DuraFresh, a leading oral hygiene company in implementing a fresh approach to getting the word out to the community to participate in the wellness walk.

Adel Luzuriaga, VP of Finance, says, “Some of you might not be familiar with our work, but we hope that you will join us in this effort to make a valuable difference in our community and become more familiar with us. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. This is our mission statement.” Lilah Dijamco, board member, adds, “Our vision is to be the premier service organization in Glendale working to achieve our goal. I was browsing over at David Airey’s website when I came upon his post on “Logo Contests Are Bad for Business.” Near the end of his interesting post, he mentioned the recent “Proudly Pinoy” logo contest held at ProudlyPinoy.org.

The contest ran from June 12, 2007 to July 17, 2007 and had close to 300 entries. The sponsor companies were Ah Yer! Philippines and PhilWebServices.

The winning artist was Joe Talisic who hails from Cebu. He currently works work as a Senior Art Director at an advertising agency in Doha, Qatar.



It was a treat to see all the creative and inspired logos submitted by many artists. Aside from the winning entry, my other favorites were:

Bill is back on How Each of US can Change the World

Pasadena, California: September 18, 2007. It was like the night before the famed Rose Parade. Hundreds of people lined up the curbside at Vromans Bookstore at 695 E. Colorado Boulevard in my home town of Pasadena (Population 160,000). Some brought blankets and heat packs to brave the change of the cooler weather overnight to wait for Bill.

Yes, Bill Clinton is back. Not at the White House. Bill was at Vromans Bookstore, eager to sign approximately 1200 copies of his new book "Giving: How Each of Us Can Change The World." Yes it was a curbside cozy bookstore, but this was the one and only California book signing event for old Bill. Hundreds of people from all over showed up early and slept on the sidewalk, waiting for Mr. Ex President to show up at 2 pm September 18.

Mind you, reviewing the rules of the signing event, I thought it will be at the White House. RULES: Only one copy of the book per person, no guests allowed. No Photography (well, Press Media is exempt)of any kind. No Cameras, video recorders, or CELLPHONES allowed in the store. No pens, other books, and gifts past Security Checkpoint(how about campaign contribution?). No request for name or date, just plain book signing. Period. Total number of books to be signed is solely at the President's discretion


People bought the voucher (pictured) from the bookstore in person ahead of time (September 2) for the event (some made its way into Craigslist for $50.00 and at Ebay for $129.99) and each voucher holder was given a tamper free wrist band on event day and stayed in line first come first served. The voucher though had a Disclaimer: "The voucher guarantees that you will receive one (1) copy of his new book, GIVING, on the event along with a very good chance of having it signed by the President." A very good chance did not specify it was a guarantee. One person was offering to get the signed book without the hassle. The next day he posted an ad at the popular website Cragslist.com stating "I will pay you if you obtain the signed book, the key is to get their early and make sure you meet Bill and get a signed book. If he leaves early or does not get to you because you were late, then no money!!" He did not disclosed how much he was willing to pay....

The President arrived promply with security escorts, emerging jovial from a black Towncar trailed by black Suburbans. He was in a neatly pressed suit. He was whisked into the store where staff and security directed the wrist banded folks one by one for the signing. He left shortly after 4 pm. The signing went by so fast with an estimated 1500 plus people who showed up. If you missed it, that was it. The only book signing event for his new book in California. I KNOW A TRICK…

They say that there comes a time when people feel down and depressed for no apparent reason. It’s not really established at what age depression comes along and affects our frame of being. I venture to guess that teenagers who have not quite established direction in life go thru it, as with baby boomers that have gone past that middle age mark and have a difficult time in getting old.

Health care specialists will tell you that it’s all about hormonal imbalance and recommend proper diet, exercise, and a daily dosage of prozac. Friends will tell you not to worry about it since all of us go thru these stages.

I remember about a year ago, one day I woke up with the blues. It was 6:30AM. The sun was up and a light breeze caused the tree branches to wave at me as I backed out of the driveway. Indeed it was a fine California morning but somehow I was not up to it. Lately, I had been feeling that way.

Jazz music flowing from the FM station on the car stereo was insufficient to lift me from that mood. Couple of times I switch the channel to hip-hop and R&B but to no avail.

Strange but the thoughts that occur in a person’s mind when they go thru an episode is unfounded. It’s like five plus five equals zero. A person tends to forget their blessings when they feel down. It is a biologically caused spiral, which affects the mind and the soul. Moments like these we feel like losers and that we are in a dark tunnel with no light to guide us.

It occurred to me then that I should call in sick and not go to work. This way I could mope around the house and try to figure out what was bugging me. However I was on my way and decided to continue to work.

As I was driving, I realized then that, my life was a rut. It was routine to the point that each day was like the day before and the day after. If I pieced all my days together, it would come out as a canvas with gray paint on it. Not enough color to cheer me up.

What does one do when confronted with a boring existence?
It was the drudgery that gave me this general feeling of lose like somebody I loved had just died. Something was missing.

I made the conscious decision to shake that proverbial tree of life. To get involved in extracurricular activities and do something other than go home after work. Take a trip or two to different latitudes and realize that there are other cultures out there that live simple but happy lives.

The root cause of feeling down is when an individual does not exercise the option to develop one’s self. It is like you are on the outside looking in. Involved people are with the flow and don’t have time to feel down. A person does not have to be gifted or talented to participate. It is in the desire to be one amongst a group that we automatically gain membership into an active life.

A year ago today my life was predictable. The decision to be happy made a difference for me. It is never too late to change our routine and be part of what we want the most. Be it mountain climbing, sewing, or whatever turns you on. Once we find a passion or two, depression takes a back seat. Actually it is quietly stored in the past filed under the category of “Growing Up Pains”.

Getting out of a mental and spiritual rut is one trick I can relay to you. As a matter of fact, I suspect you already know this solution. Let me just prod you a little bit. Get your butt out there and enjoy life! Please. Like the saying goes, life is too short.

9-11 Sculpture and The Art of Sculpturing Ourselves

I woke up early that morning to finish the sculpture I was working on for almost two months. I was so excited the sculpture would be erected that day. All it needed was a coat of paint for the four pillars. It was around 8:30 in the morning when the first dab of paint was applied to one of the pillars. The color I chose? It was a dark gray. More than an hour later, I went inside the house for a glass of water. To my amazement, the TV’s volume in the living room was unusually loud. My mom and sister were shocked by the news: One of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York was burning. Soon after, another plane hit the second tower. It was a sight we could not forget—people plunging to their deaths to escape the burning building. Later on, the whole mass of the two towers crumbled from within spewing tons and tons of dust and debris. It’s unbelievable to see the icon of America’s financial might disappear in such a short time. This day, like December 7, 1941, will be long remembered as a day of infamy.

For me, I could not help wondering why I chose dark gray for the sculpture’s four pillars that had an uncanny resemblance to the World Trade buildings. It’s as if there was a foreboding—a dark foreboding—of the somber or grim things to come that day. I love bright colors—but this time, something dark caught my fancy possibly to give contrast to the center sculpture that has the seven colors of the rainbow and a gold on top.

When the sculpture was finished that tragic day, without much thinking I named it, “A Tribute to Humanity: Ever-Growing…Ever-Unfolding…Ever-Evolving.” It’s dimension: 10 feet high, 6 feet wide, and 5 feet across. The four towers are made of wood, concrete and acrylic paint. The ten-feet colorful leaf-motif center is made up of 46 slats painted with the seven colors of the rainbow. The topmost slat is painted gold. A copper tube painted with gold spirals the center from ground to the peak.

I had no idea yet what the whole sculpture meant. (Definitely, in the back of my mind, some ideas have been formed). That day it dawned on me that the four pillars symbolize our physical nature. They speak of the four elements of nature that affect us. They also posit the four directions in space: North, South, East, and West. Our physical body is very much affected by the dualities in life, hence, the suffering and coarseness at the beginning aptly depicted as the roughness at the base of the pillar. Then we learn and learn and learn from our mistakes. This continuous learning elevates our physical, mental and spiritual attributes thereby signaling our refinements in the process of life. The dark color gray signifies our struggle while in the dark searching for that elusive meaning of life. It is not by coincidence 9-11 tells us we are not connected to one another when we terrorize or inflict harm to our brothers and sisters. Our life becomes muddled in darkness when we think the other is separate from us. When we are in unison or in harmony with our fellow human beings, we are in the light. God, Allah, Christ, Nature, The Universe or whatever you may call it, is truly wonderful: Through pains, sufferings we learn and grow. Our life is an “Ever-growing” process, thus, the several heights of the four pillars.

Though we are surrounded with tragedies, pain and sufferings, there is something within us that does not succumb to these frustrations of living. This is the non-changing repose where we turn when we feel exhausted. This is our center. This center is the colorful “Leaf-motif,” our spirit, standing proud at the middle of any mayhem, the pivotal point in our learning and growth. It’s an impregnable fort of anyone. Nothing can move it though the storm of life seems unbearable. Those who perished or survived the 9-11 tragedy have shown what this center meant. Ditto to their loved ones. Ditto to all Americans. Ditto to countless peoples in this planet. The tragedy even made us more united…and more resilient. It is this unfettered optimism that gives color to the “Ever-unfolding” of the spirit, thus the prismatic hues emblazoned on the 45 slats. In each and every one of us dwells this divinity, this unwavering spark of light that is infinite and immortal. It is “Ever-evolving,” spiraling upward longing for its higher connections…the topmost golden 46th slat.

Life is art; art is life. Whether we are aware of it or not, we are sculpturing ourselves through our thoughts, feelings, words, and actions.

Voyager 1 and 2 Celebrates 30 Years of Deep Space Travel

Los Angeles: September 5, 1977 was the historic launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, of the Voyager 1 spacecraft which is now estimated to be on the outskirts of our solar system at 9.7 Billion miles from the Sun. This is the furthest travel of any man-made vehicle launched from planet Earth and away from the Sun. This month, after three decades of flight, it still continues to send back impressive information collected from its various onboard instruments. All these information are relayed back to NASA, Voyager 1 being the pioneer in deep space exploration and the only object from Earth to enter the Sun's domain.


The craft along with sister ship Voyager 2 launched in August 20, 1977 (but have a slower trajectory so it can pass by the planets of our solar system) have sent back images of the outer giant planets in our solar system namely Jupiter, Saturn (not the car, the planet, pictured on left), Uranus, and Neptune and an endless barrage of data not only of our solar system but now, of deep space.

Adding to the vast images and information they have sent back to Earth on their voyage outwards to deep space, these space crafts also carry a wide array of "greeting cards" from Earth. They each have a time capsule complete with greetings, images, and sounds from Earth as well as directions on how to find the planet if the Voyager space crafts are discovered or recovered by something or someone from outer space. The next time Voyager 1 and 2 will encounter another planetary system will be in approximately 40,000 Earth years. An outerspace "message in a bottle" as author Carl Sagan puts it, who was one of the committee members who put together the "Golden Record Images and Sound" golden disk (pictured).


To understand these deep space travel, just imagine a pump-boat or motorized outrigger canoe (Filipino version of a motorized Kayak with bamboo wing floaters) plowing thru the ocean, being tossed by the strong currents. As the ship sails ahead, shocks spread around the vessel. The area under the Sun's influence called the Heliosphere is constantly buffeted by interstellar wind (just like the ocean waves). Voyager 1 and 2 are being bumped into different directions by these strong interstellar wind, and powered by their nuclear batttery cell, cruising speed is at a mind boggling one million miles per day, a rate that will take it from Los Angeles to New York in four minutes flat, with an inexhaustible plutonium fuel system that does not need a Mobil or 76 Gas station for fuel fill-up, these space crafts are just too amazing to comprehend.

Caltech in Pasadena manages NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) which built and operates Voyager 1 and 2 each travelling in two different directions into the Heliosphere, each one sporting an antenna that has a diameter of 230 feet; same size as a football field. Happy 30th Anniversary Voyager 1 and 2. The mission that was expected to last only five years are now celebrating thirty years and counting. These space crafts are entering interstellar space, out of reach from our solar system onto their very long trek towards galaxies unknown. And come to think of it, I thought driving from Pasadena to San Diego is a very very long drive to travel. Mankind when they work together as a team is truly amazing. Godspeed Voyager.

FILIPINO PRIDE

First thing you see on me is my brown skin. This is not just melanin; it is my identity. Inferior? Dirty? Savage? No. Cultured? Interesting? Diverse? Yes. Long ago my parents were born in the Southeast Asian islands known as the Philippines, but I first opened my eyes in America. Passing the years, I've become fluent in English, eaten hamburgers, and voted In democratic elections. I have grown to be American, but Never have I forgotten, discarded, nor despised my Filipino Origins.

Pride runs through my veins every June 12th.
Roar is what I do when Manny Pacquaio lands the knockout punch.
If I eat one lumpia I follow it with five more, and my next
Dialect to learn is Tagalog. What does my Filipino heritage mean to me?Entitlement to culture, history, uniqueness; it is my identity.

Kung Mahawi Man Ang Ulap presents a powerhouse cast featuring Philippines’s most sought after award winning actor Dennis Trillo and today’s hottest young star Nadine Samonte together with veteran actor Tommy Abuel, Gardo Versoza, Glydel Mercado, Jeremy Marquez, Iwa Moto, Vangie Labalan, Ces Quesada, Aiza Marquez, Tyron Perez, Hazel Ann Mendoza and Chuck Allie.

The compelling love story of Kung Mahawi Man Ang Ulap, a 1984 mega hit movie of Hilda Koronel, Christopher de Leon and Amy Austria, is about a young wealthy woman named Catherine (Nadine Samonte) and her rich boyfriend Stan (Dennis Trillo), who comes home from the United States to marry his long-time girlfriend. The young couple already announced their engagement and with their wealth, expects a bright future for their family.

But prior to their wedding, Stan and Catherine’s fate will enormously change with the intrusion of Pablo (Gardo Versoza) and his children Rita (Iwa Moto), a sexy young lady who uses her beauty and body to get what she wants; Jojo (Jeremy Marquez), an arrogant guy who likes girls and always gets into trouble; and the spoiled brat Chona (Hazel Ann Mendoza).

Pablo, a lazy drunkard who wants to get rich but refuses to work, comes across the announcement of Catherine’s engagement and discovers that she is the daughter of his first love, Minda (Glydel Mercado), who is now a widow.

The devious and scheming Pablo goes to Minda with his three children and tells Minda their situation. Minda, who still loves Pablo, offers to help them, which Catherine firmly opposes.

Unknown to Minda, her decision to let Pablo's family move into their house will lead to Catherine’s sufferings and even ruin her engagement with Stan.

With Rita setting her eyes on Stan, Jojo sexually attracted to Catherine and Minda marrying Pablo, will Catherine be able to withstand the troubles and miseries caused by Pablo’s family? Will Minda help Catherine get through all ordeals or will she betray her daughter in favour of her new husband? And will true love keep Stan and Catherine together?
